Hypertension is a degenerative disease which is a serious problem nowadays. Based on the Health Profile of Padang City in 2017 hypertension was ranked second as many as 52.825 cases. The incidence of hypertension is mostly related to a diet high in sodium but low in potassium and calcium. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of sodium, potassium and calcium intake in the incidence of hypertension in Ulak Karang Health Center area, Padang Utara District, Padang City, 2019.
This research is descriptive with a cross sectional study design. The study was conducted on hypertensive patients at the Ulak Karang Health Center on Padang City which was conducted from August 2018 to May 2019. Samples were taken by accidental sampling method which amounted to 35 people. Data collection is done by interview and measurement methods. The data collected consisted of respondents 'sodium, potassium and calcium intake and the results of the respondents' blood pressure measurements. The research data was processed by computerization and univariate data analysis was carried out to see the picture between variables.
The results showed all respondents had a history of hypertension, but at the time of blood pressure measurements there were 57.1% of respondents who had abnormal blood pressure, 42.9% of respondents had normal blood pressure, 57.14% of respondents had more sodium intake, 100% of respondents have less potassium intake, and 97.1% of respondents have less calcium intake.
It is recommended that health workers at the Padang Ulak Karang Health Center provide education about recommended food sources (foods high in potassium and calcium) and not recommended (high sodium foods) for people with hypertension. For the next researcher can continue the research using different variables and instruments.
